Exploring the True Meaning of Reiki

Wednesday 8th June, 2022

I realise I have been silent on this blog for a very long time. I have been very conscious of this, but the right words, themes, or follow-on from my previous post just weren’t coming to me. It is not that I have had writer’s block - I have been writing on my other blogs and social media - but I have not found what I wanted or needed to say here. Until today…

It seems fitting that today is my birthday, given that inspiration has finally come. My husband said to me just this morning as he brought me my birthday cup of tea and biscuit in bed and we watched the rain pour down outside: ‘today is your day and you must do what you want - even a bit of birthday writing if you feel like it.’ I had not expected that just a short time later, and a continued read of a book I haven’t picked up for far too long, would result in the inspiration that I’d been waiting for. What a lovely birthday present from the Universe!

And this is what I want to say:-

Reiki is not scary.

Reiki is your friend.

Reiki has your back.

Reiki can move you on when you are stuck.

Reiki is there to be PART of you life on this earth, not to take you away on a spiritual path disconnected from your reality.

Reiki is not a religion.

Reiki is not a cult.

Reiki is a SELF-HELP tool in itself, better than any book on the subject of self-development.

Reiki is a WAY OF LIFE.

The point about Reiki energy is that it is a gift from the Universe to help us here on Planet Earth in our current physical incarnation. It is a very high vibrational energy of pure Divine Light, Unconditional Love and Universal Wisdom. It supports and nurtures your own healing, its gentle energy bringing about subtle changes in your mind, body and spirit/soul. For millennia this aspect of healing had been taken on trust - and in the modern scientific era been dismissed as ‘Woo-Woo’. The healing practices and arts of the Ancients tuned into these aspects of the Universe - from planetary influences to recognising the key energy pathways and nodal points on Earth (the positions of stone circles, churches, devotional points etc are all founded on this intuitive knowledge). But now science is catching up….

Many scientists have been doing clandestine experiments on energy healing for decades - but have not been able to acknowledge this research without losing all credibility in the scientific community, with the resulting loss of funding etc etc. One of the first books I bought when I begun my own research in this field documents controlled studies which have been going on since the 1960s (with research also having been done in the 1950s). It has all been essentially ‘underground’. However, slowly, slowly things are changing and certainly Reiki healing is now being openly studied in medical environments - and the results have astounded even the most sceptical of medics and health workers.

One such project, Connecting Reiki With Medicine, has been going for a number of years now - charitably funded - at St George’s Hospital in Kingston, West London. You can learn more about it here

One of the key aspects of healing is the recognition that we are not separate to each other or to Nature or to the Universe. This is something that the Ancients understood. It is this very Oneness which is the essence of Harmony and harmony is essential to Inner Peace - and indeed outer peace. If we could all be at peace with ourselves, we would be at peace with others too. For lack of inner peace creates discord within oneself, and that discord then radiates outwards into the world in the form of anger and hatred and envy and mistrust and dishonesty and fear. People who have achieved inner peace have achieved peace with the world around them too.

If you will allow me, I would now like to quote the first two paragraphs from the first chapter, Historical Perspectives, of the aforementioned book, printed in Germany in 1992:-

From anthropological studies of pre-industrial societies, it is thought that our distant ancestors viewed themselves as close to nature and intimately involved with it. They did not see themselves as distinct from the laws and influences of the environment. The forces of nature, the stars, the spirits and the gods that controlled the cosmos also ruled the people.

Western scientists have pejoratively judged such closeness with nature as a confusion between what is within a person and what is external to him; what he can control by physical methods and what he seeks to influence by ‘magical’ means. Anthropologists report that shamans or medicine men (the mediators between humans and the world at large) use prayers, chants, talismans, herbs and potions to influence a world that humans in that ‘primitive’ society could not hope to understand - much less influence to any degree. This presumes that pre-industrial man deludes himself through wishful thinking into believing that he can influence a world which is actually beyond his comprehension and control. Closer, more open scrutiny of modern medicine men such as the Native American chief, Rolling Thunder, reveals that so-called primitives may know very effective methods of psi healing. Personal explorations of healing may lead to greater awareness of and trust in our intuitive modes for knowing.

For Humanity to progress, we need to open our minds to oneness; we need to let go of arrogance and embrace humility. With these mind and soul sets, then science and the healing arts may finally be able to live in harmony together -  and make the changes that are urgently required for the survival of mankind.

With that wisdom, the beautiful place which we call home, Planet Earth, has a greater chance of survival too.

And that, for me, is the true definition and ambition of Holistic Living…to live in harmony, not discord, with ourselves, with our fellow humankind and with the extraordinary natural world of which we are part of and in which we continue to evolve.

Embrace the true meaning of Reiki, and I truly believe this ambitious goal will become a whole lot easier to achieve than we ever imagined…

In my next post, I shall give you some visual evidence of the healing powers of Reiki - so stay tuned!
